Okay so maybe thats just an English saying but Jack here is short for Jack S*** which is another saying for Nothing.

So whats the point of this post, Well really to get something off my chest and alert you all to it.

So we all know that there are various ranking sites out there that state these are the best Traffic Exchanges and These are the best TE’s and a lot of people actually trust them and never test them. I know a few people that will only use the ones in the top 10 of a certain ranker.

So I have always been dubious of the rankers because as someone that tracks and tests all his advertising I have consistently noticed that the results I get match no where near the rankings I see on results but more closely on where the most affiliate commissions was earned.

You see I have been promoting sites as an affiliate for years, and I have built up a downline in a lot of sites, one that allows me the pleasure in not only having a lot of traffic come in from it but also it earns me some good recurring commissions.

However when results of a site drop I stop promoting it as I like to promote sites that are of use to you my readers and not just ones that make money for me like a lot do, Results in terms of signups and sales at my sites.

However after talking to a few owners a while back I started to think maybe these rankers were based more on what commission was earned for the ranker owner and not the results any members should expect.

A few owners said they had an impossible task of even getting noticed or into the rankers, You see a lot of ranker owners only rank sites they use so if they are not a member of your site it may never get in, also a close friend of mine found a ranker owner was not a big fan of his and would never include his sites ever, When the face fits etc.

Anyway as you know my Mail Our list is one of the biggest LFMVM based mailers out there and has been for years, It was regularly in the top 10 at a couple of rankers, heck it was in the top 5 at one for over a year and top ten for about 3 years now.

But then something happened, I removed the affiliate program from my sites as part of the big changes I was making and actually because of the publicity that surrounded that according to stats and our tracking the activity and results there actually went up. This was also part due to people having more sends (credits) as part of the changes.

So what happened, Well as you can probably guess from where I am going with this, Over the next couple of weeks not only did we drop out the top 10, We was removed from some completely.

Coincidence, I think not. Another one actually dropped us from the rankings a couple of months before that after I had refused to give them a ton of free credits to use to track.

So make of this as you will and make of the rankers what you will. But have a look at some of the sites at the top of them. Some are hardly seen, some have terrible designs, some I have not heard from the owner for years but one thing I have that I’m guessing some ranker owners do too is that I have some nice downlines in them earning me free ads and affiliate commissions from way back when they was around a lot.

Then look at some good sites about that you see all the time and they are not in the ranker at all.

Outstanding read Steve . I love that some of my top performers are ever mentioned in rankings . Most of these ranking systems have nothing to do with metrics . They are glorified popularity contests . The only ranking I pay attention to is the ranking I give to the sites that are bringing me results.

Exactly, People should try all advertising sites that look quality and then judge themselves by way of results 🙂

  2. Some owners take offence and consider ranking list as life or death. IMO, Rankings sites just gives you an idea of what works for them and still is not 100% unbiased. What sites they use and where they are upgraded plays a role in how they list it. And the commission thing too as you have stated. I take a look at them to see if I can find a few more new sources. Other than that, one should not bother too much about it. If you want to know what really works, get a tracker.

Indeed, tracking your results is the only way to know and you have to try them because something that works for one might not work for another 🙂

So are there ANY reliable ranking sites?

    • Steve Ayling says:

There are some that are a bit clearer like where it says a persons views but I only really recommend tracking your ads and testing all the places yourself. See what works for some of my sites don’t work for others etc, you need to find the ones that work for you and what your promoting.

  4. Hi Steve. Thanks for this info. I am going to start using your list again – Mail Our List. I need some fresh eyes. I’m glad I saw you in the Bloggers Cafe on Skype. I said to myself, “I’m going to read some of Steve’s blog posts today. I bet he has some great info to share.” 🙂
